Baraziliyeh
What Is Baraziliyeh?
Baraziliyeh is a fast-paced, tactical card game based on laying down sets and sequences. It can be played in teams or individually, and it’s inspired by the famous Brazilian game Buraco.
Objective of the Game
The goal of the game is to collect points by getting rid of all your cards through melds (laying down cards on the table).
You can form melds in one of two ways:
- Sequences: Consecutive cards of the same suit.
- Sets: Cards of the same rank (number or face).
Setup and Dealing
- Two standard decks (104 cards) are used, and jokers are removed.
- Each player receives 11 cards, dealt counterclockwise, starting from the player to the dealer’s right.
- Two extra piles of 11 cards each are set aside — these are called the “100s” (or 200 together).
- A player who finishes their first 11 cards can take one “100” pile and continue playing.
- The remaining cards are placed face down in the center as the draw pile.
- The first player must draw a card from the pile and reveal it. If they don’t want it, they can discard (burn) it.
Key Terms
Sequence
A sequence is a set of three or more consecutive cards of the same suit.
Example: 10♥ – J♥ – Q♥ – K♥ ✅
- The Ace (A) can come before 2 or after the King, but not in the middle.
- Q-K-A-2-3 ❌
- A-2-3-4 ✅
- J-Q-K-A ✅
Set
A set is three or more cards of the same rank (number or face), regardless of suit.
Example: 5♥ – 5♠ – 5♦ ✅
You can repeat suits if the value matches.
Joker (2)
The number 2 acts as a joker — it can replace any missing card in a sequence or set.
- A meld cannot contain more than one joker.
- Once a joker (2) is used in a meld, it can’t be moved to another meld, but it can be shifted within the same meld to adjust positions.
Project
When you lay down a sequence or set of seven or more cards, it’s called a Project.
Projects earn bonus points and are required before a team can end the round.
- 200 Project: 7+ cards without a joker.
Example: 3♥-4♥-5♥-6♥-7♥-8♥-9♥
- 100 Project: 7+ cards including a joker (2).
Example: 3♥-4♥-5♥-6♥-7♥-8♥-2♦
How to Play
Each turn has three main steps:
- Draw a card
- Draw one card from the draw pile or take the entire discard pile.
- The first player must draw and show their card — they cannot discard it on their first turn.
- If the draw pile runs out, one of the “100” piles replaces it. If both are gone, the round ends with no winner.
- If a player has only one card left, they cannot take the discard pile if it contains only one card — they must draw from the pile.
2. Lay Down Cards (Optional)
You can:
- Lay down new sequences or sets, or
- Add cards to your team’s existing melds.
You cannot add cards to your opponent’s melds.
3. Discard
End your turn by discarding one card onto the discard pile.
To close the round (go out), you must:
- Discard your last card, and
- Your team must have at least one Project (7+ cards) on the table.
Endgame (Direct & Indirect)
There are two styles for the endgame:
Direct (Mubasher)
- To end your turn, you must lay down all your cards at once.
- You then take a “100” pile (extra 11 cards) and continue playing immediately.
Indirect
- You can either:
- Lay down all your cards and take a 100 pile immediately, or
- Lay down all but one card to discard, then take a 100 pile — but it won’t be active until your next turn.
Scoring
When a player finishes their first 11 cards, their team can take the first 100 pile.
- A team that doesn’t take any 100 piles loses 100 points at the end of the round.
- To close, the team must have at least one Project (7+ cards).
Winning the Game
- The first team to reach 2000 points wins!
- If both teams pass 2000 in the same round, the higher score wins.
- If it’s a tie, play one extra round.
Additional Rules
- If the draw pile ends, use the first 100 pile, then the second if needed.
- A Project made entirely of 2s (seven 2s) wins the game instantly with +2000 points!
- If no team has a Project when the round ends, both lose 200 points and no table cards count.
- Once a team reaches 1000+ points, they must start each new round by laying down at least 75 points worth of melds before continuing freely.
- Jawaker uses the Direct closing style (you must lay down all your cards).
- Quick Mode: You can shorten the game to 1000 points instead of 2000.
- Solo Mode: You can play 1 vs 1, with the same rules applied.
