OKEY 101
If you enjoy fast-paced games that combine focus, calculation, and smart risk-taking, OKEY 101 offers a fun challenge from the very first round.
Played with numbered tiles instead of cards, OKEY 101 is all about creating valid melds, choosing the right time to open your hand, and trying to finish the round with the fewest points possible while avoiding costly mistakes.
Game Setup
Before the game begins, you’ll need:
- Players: Usually 4 players, with a 2-player mode also available.
- Tiles: 106 tiles numbered from 1 to 13 in four colors: red, black, blue, and yellow, plus two fake joker tiles (called Joker indicators)
- Goal: Finish the game with the lowest score.
OKEY 101 is usually played over 3 rounds, with a quick 1-round mode also available.
Dealing the Tiles
At the start of each round:
- Each player receives 21 tiles.
- The player who starts the round receives 22 tiles.
- The starting player does not draw a tile and begins by discarding one tile.
One tile is also flipped face-up on the table as the joker indicator. This tile determines the joker for that round.

The Joker
The joker, also called the Okey tile, can replace any tile.

The joker indicator is the first tile flipped face-up + 1 and of the same color.

For example, if the joker indicator is Blue 8, the joker is Blue 9.
If the joker indicator is 13, the joker becomes 1 of the same color.
How to Play
Players take turns drawing and discarding tiles.
On your turn, you try to improve your hand and create valid melds, then end your turn by discarding one tile onto the discard pile.
Your goal is to open your hand, add tiles to melds on the table, and get rid of all your tiles before the other players.
How to Open Your Hand
To open your hand for the first time, the total value of your melds must be at least 101 points.

You can open using:
- Runs: Sequences of three or more consecutive tiles of the same color.

- Sets: Groups of three or four tiles with the same number in different colors.

Once you have opened, you can add your remaining tiles to any valid meld on the table, whether it belongs to you or another player. If the meld is correct and one of the players melded pairs, you can also start melding pairs.
Opening with Pairs
You can also open with 5 pairs instead of reaching 101 points.

A pair consists of two identical tiles.

Opening with pairs is a powerful but risky option. If you win with pairs, your opponents may receive heavier penalties. If you lose, your own penalty points may also increase.
If you open with pairs, you cannot later open using runs or sets. However, you can still add tiles to melds opened by other players.
Drawing from the Discard Pile

- You may take only the tile discarded by the previous player, and only if it allows you to open your hand immediately.
- You can’t take that tile and keep it in your hand for later.
- If you can’t use it to open immediately, you must draw from the draw pile instead.
- If you don’t want to draw the previous player’s tile, you can simply use the draw pile.
End of the Round
The round ends when a player melds all their tiles and discards the final tile in their hand.
A player can also win by laying down all 21 tiles in a single turn. In this case, they do not need to reach 101 points, as long as all the tiles form valid melds and they have one final tile left to discard.
If the draw pile runs out before anyone wins, the round ends without winner points being awarded, and scores are calculated according to the tiles remaining in each player’s hand.
Scoring
In OKEY 101, the lowest score is best.
At the end of each round, the winner receives negative points, while the other players receive penalty points based on the tiles remaining in their hands and how they played during the round.
Winning with Sets and Runs — Normal Discard
If the winner finishes the round using sets and runs and discards a normal tile:
| Player | Score |
|---|---|
| Winner | -101 |
| Players who opened with sets or runs | Value of the tiles remaining in hand |
| Players who opened with pairs | 2× the value of the tiles remaining in hand |
| Players who never opened at all (21 tiles) | +202 |
Winning with Sets and Runs — Joker Discard
If the winner finishes the round by discarding a joker:
| Player | Score |
|---|---|
| Winner | -202 |
| Players who opened with sets or runs | 2× the value of the remaining tiles, including any unused joker |
| Players who opened with pairs | 4× the value of the tiles remaining in hand |
| Players who never opened | +404 |
Winning with Pairs — Normal Discard
If the winner finishes using pairs and discards a normal tile:
| Player | Score |
|---|---|
| Winner | -202 |
| Players who opened with sets or runs | 2× the value of the tiles remaining in hand |
| Other players who opened with pairs | 4× the value of the tiles remaining in hand |
| Players who never opened | +404 |
Winning with Pairs — Joker Discard
If the winner finishes using pairs and discards a joker:
| Player | Score |
|---|---|
| Winner | -404 |
| Players who opened with sets or runs | 4× the value of the tiles remaining in hand |
| Other players who opened with pairs | 8× the value of the tiles remaining in hand |
| Players who never opened | +404 |
Okey / Hand — Playing All Tiles at Once
If a player lays down all 21 tiles in a single turn and then discards a normal tile:
| Player | Score |
|---|---|
| Winner | -202 |
| Players who never opened | +404 |
| Players who opened with sets or runs | 2× the value of the tiles remaining in hand |
| Players who opened with pairs | 4× the value of the tiles remaining in hand |
Note: When winning with a Hand, you do not need to reach 101 points. If all your tiles can form valid melds, while keeping one final tile to discard, you can open your entire hand and win the round immediately.
Hand — Playing All Tiles at Once with a Joker Discard
If a player lays down all 21 tiles at once and ends the round by discarding a joker:
| Player | Score |
|---|---|
| Winner | -404 |
| Players who never opened | +808 |
| Players who opened with sets or runs | 4× the value of the tiles remaining in hand |
| Players who opened with pairs | 8× the value of the tiles remaining in hand |
When the Draw Pile Runs Out
If the draw pile runs out before any player can finish the round:
- The round ends immediately.
- Any player who has not opened receives a +202 point penalty.
- Players who have opened are scored according to the value of the tiles remaining in their hands.
- No player receives the winner’s -101 points.
- The player with the lowest total score is considered the winner of the round, which can be especially important in 1-round matches.
The winner receives negative points, while the other players receive penalties based on the tiles remaining in their hands.
Penalties increase in situations such as:
- The winner finishes by discarding a joker.
- The winner opened with pairs.
- A player never opened.
- A player still has a joker in hand after opening.
Extra Penalties
Some moves add 101 penalty points to your score, including:
- Discarding a joker before going out with all your tiles.
- Discarding a tile that could have been added to an existing meld on the table.
- Still having a joker in your hand after opening when the round ends.
- Taking back an attempted opening and ending your turn without placing any meld on the table.
So always check the table carefully before you discard.
Quick Summary
Goal: Open your hand, get rid of your tiles, and finish the game with the lowest score.
Key Rule: You need at least 101 points to open, unless you open with 5 pairs.
